At SHOT Show this year, [easyazon_link identifier=”B001MYEU0E” locale=”US” tag=”bluesheecom-20″]Speer Ammunition[/easyazon_link] announced several additions to their quality Gold Dot G2 line of handgun ammunition. Speer Ammunition is not new to the law enforcement market, and the Gold Dot G2 line is specifically targeted for police users. In fact, Speer claims their Gold Dot ammunition is the #1 law enforcement duty round on the market. The Speer Gold Dot ammunition is designed for duty use, while the Lawman line is designed for training and practice.
Speer Gold Dot G2 ammunition goes through a 5-part construction process:
- The Speer Gold Dot bullet begins with an alloyed lead core.
- Uni-Cor technology bonds an incredibly uniform jacket to the core—one molecule at a time.
- First stage of patented* two-stage hollow point process creates memory lines that expansion can follow.
- Second forming stage finishes the cavity to match bullet weight and velocity, produces a smooth leading edge for reliable feeding, and a uniform heel for superb accuracy.
- Bullet and case are assembled using top-quality nickel-plated brass cases, clean-burning, low-flash propellants, and famous and reliable [easyazon_link identifier=”B005804QR0″ locale=”US” tag=”bluesheecom-20″]CCI® primers[/easyazon_link].
Speer Gold Dot G2 ammunition has several features that are absolute requirements for use as law enforcement duty ammunition. To start with, Speer has redesigned the Gold Dot bullets to meet current research on ballistics; as well as, capturing the best of modern manufacturing techniques. Instead of a traditional large cavity for the hollow-point rounds, the Speer Gold Dot G2 bullets have a shallow dish that is filled with a “high-performance elastomer”.
New Speer Gold Dot G2 Ammunition
Cartridge | Bullet Grain | Bullet Type | Muzzle Velocity (fps) |
---|---|---|---|
9mm Luger | 147 | G2 | 970 |
.40 S&W | 180 | G2 | 1015 |
.45 Auto + P | 230 | G2 | 910 |
Speer claims that on impact the elastomer in the Gold Dot G2 bullets is forced into engineered internal fissures to start the expansion process. This comes from lessons learned from traditional large hole hollow points that have become clogged with clothing and failed to expand as advertised. Speer claims the elastomer will not allow the hollow point to fill with intermediate barrier material, but will instead react to the forces of impact to create more consistent expansion and penetration across different barrier types, gun platforms, and barrel lengths.
Additional Speer Gold Dot G2 Ammunition Features:
- Extremely uniform expansion and penetration
- Exclusive Gold Dot “Uni-Cor Bonded” construction virtually eliminates core/jacket separation
- Structural-plated, pressure-formed core
- Designed for excellent feeding and reliability in duty firearms
- Delivers an impressive standing in FBI Protocol Testing
- Nickel-plated casings
- Retail Price – Between $22.50 and $24.50 per box of 20 – depending on caliber.
In addition to the new Handgun ammunition, [easyazon_link identifier=”B001YB68SC” locale=”US” tag=”bluesheecom-20″]Speer[/easyazon_link] has introduced two new cartridges in their Gold Dot Duty Rifle line. The Gold Dot Duty rifle ammunition is specifically designed to maintain expected expansion from a variety of barrel lengths out to 200 yards, including barrels as short as 10″ long.

My agency has never used Speer ammunition for duty purposes, but I have heard very good reports from nearby agencies that have used that ammo. The addition of a 62-grain .223 cartridge should provide some very good results. My agency uses a different brand in 62-grain .223, and has found it to be the most consistently accurate out of a variety of [easyazon_link identifier=”B00238XECI” locale=”US” tag=”bluesheecom-20″]AR-15[/easyazon_link] makes and barrel lengths.
We have used Speer Lawman ammunition as training ammunition from time to time. For the most part the Lawman ammunition has performed very well with impressive accuracy for target ammunition. We did have some manufacturing issues with older style Speer training ammo, but as noted in this older article, these types of mishaps during manufacturing can happen to any reputable company.
