On June 29, 2015 Safariland Group announced that they had acquired VIEVU, one of the leading companies in the development of body worn video cameras for law enforcement officers. Founded by a former Seattle SWAT cop, VIEVU has gained enormous momentum as the entire country debates the viability of body worn cameras for law enforcement officers. BlueSheepDog is working on an in-depth article covering the benefits and drawbacks of body worn cameras that we plan to reveal in the upcoming weeks.
Safariland is one of the largest law enforcement supply companies in the world, and rightly so. Safariland started in a garage when Neale Perkins made a custom holster for his father. Just a few years later Safariland was acquired by Armor Holdings, whose flagship company, American Body Armor, had set industry standards for soft and concealable body armor. Years later the conglomerate once again chose Safariland as the name of the group, representing a wide variety of outstanding products serving law enforcement, and first responders.
VIEVU Body Cameras
The VIEVU body cameras are compact, simple to operate, yet pack a wealth of digital technology to provide a clear image of what occurred during a police-citizen encounter. Currently the company has (2) offerings:
This was the first design presented to the law enforcement community. Compact in design, the LE3 was specifically designed to be attached to an officer’s uniform, while being small enough to stay out-of-the-way and avoid snagging on other gear. To activate the LE3 the officer simply had to swipe the camera guard down, exposing the digital camera for recording. To turn the LE3 off was as simple as raising the camera guard to block the camera.
VIEVU offered charging stations, and vehicle download capability to further expand the usefulness and portability of the LE3 camera system. The simplicity and compact design is one of the reasons that the VIEVU enjoyed such great success. VIEVU cameras are now being worn by over 4000 law enforcement agencies in 16 countries.
